We’re lucky here in Utah because just three weeks after the Fourth of July, we get to celebrate another great holiday… Pioneer Day. This is a celebration of the day when the Mormon Pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. It’s such a big and important event for Utah that the day begins with a huge parade downtown. We didn’t take Josh and Jane to see the actual parade, but we did make a trip down to Liberty Park to see some of the beautiful floats as they made their way into the park.
That evening we headed down to Alpine to Pete and Michelle Sundwall’s home for a family picnic and get-together with the Cannon family. This is a somewhat new tradition over the past three or four years that has been established in our family. Traditionally, my mom always had a twenty-fourth of July party at our home growing up, but with her passing, Pete and Michelle have picked up the torch and they make this night a lot of fun for everyone. There is always a great dinner, some square-dancing, a fish pond with prizes for the little kids, horse rides, and just a lot of visiting and “catching up”.
My mom’s side of the family has really grown and we don’t get together very often anymore accept main holidays, so it’s nice to be able to see everyone and visit for a while. Family traditions are so important and they give us something to look forward to. Alan and I look forward to keeping and creating many family traditions for our little family… it's what makes life meaningful and fun!
Perhaps the most exciting part of the day came when we went to Melis and Stu's home for a "party after the party." With the help of their dad, Jake and Porter had just bought and re-built a totally fun, bright red four-wheeler. The boys took Josh and Jane on a really fun and fairly fast ride around their beautiful one-acre yard. Jake and Port were actually very careful and they are so cute with Josh and Jane... I caught a couple photos of them as they went zipping by. I'm not sure I've ever seen them having more fun than that night with their big cousins. Family brings great joy and is such a blessing in our lives.
